【Introduction】
‘Travel Unbound’ offers an exploration into the intricacies of identity, providing an immersive experience where concepts of self, body, gender, nature, and nation-state are not only observed but deeply felt and engaged. Through a series of installations and moving images, the exhibition contextualizes a travel across time and space with no specific anchor point.
Traversing unfamiliar landscapes from a hut, a rice field, a jungle, to a cemetery, the audience confronts the unseen forces that constitute each individual. With that, the lasting legacies and continuing acts of migration, war, oppression, and marginalization are hinted at, giving voice to those often left unheard.
From diverse standpoints of Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, English artist David Blandy, Paiwan artist Ljaljeqelan Patadalj (Guo Yue Yang), Bunun artist Ali Istanda (Hu Jia Yu), and Taiwanese artist Lin Yi-Chi, ‘Travel Unbound’ takes the audience on a journey that interrogates the geographies of belonging which transcends beyond geographical landscapes and opens to the mental, spiritual and metaphysical ones. It blends imagination, myth, and memory, creating alternative worlds where human bodies and intangible spirits, history and memory, reality and fiction coexist.
‘Travel Unbound’ invites audiences to critically engage with how identity is woven through personal and collective histories across Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, and in the broader world that constantly tries to define it.
